Italian Polo team emerged winners of the Johnnie Walker Gold Label International Polo Cup beating Indian Polo team by 8.5 goals to 8 in an exciting and thrilling polo match played today at the Jaipur Polo Ground. Gen Deepak Kapoor, PVSM,AVSM,SM,VSM,ADC, Chief of the Army Staff, President Indian Polo Association and Army Polo & Riding and Mr Asif Adil, Managing Director, Diageo India gave away the prizes and trophies to the players.
The Jaipur Polo Ground witnessed a large gathering with the stands fully packed. The match was very exciting, thrilling and hard fought. Both the teams displayed their superb stick work and good horsemanship. Italian team was a 12 goal and Indian team was a 14 goal so Italian team started with 1.5 goal handicap advantage. Abhimanyu Pathak scored a brilliant opening goal for India while Carlos Maria Bertola, Captain Italian team converted a 60 yard penalty as their team's first field goal. Abhimanyu Pathak added one more goal in this chukker while Goffrdo Cutinelli Rendina scored one more goal for Italy. In the 2nd chukker Indian team could not score any goal while Miguel Amieva Saravio scored 3 goals for Italy (conversion of two penalties and one field goal). In the 3rd chukker both teams scored one goal each. The fourth chukekr was dominated to India in which Angad Kalaan, Captain Indian team scored 3 goals (two conversion of penalties and one field goal), Lt Col Tarun Sirohi was other scorer while Italian team could not score any goal in this chukker. The score was 7.5 go 7 in favour of Italy at the end of 4th chukker. The 5th and final chukker was played at a very fast pace. Lt Col Tarun Sirohi scored a brilliant goal and take the Indian team into lead for the first time but during the dying seconds of the play Italian team got a penalty and converted into a goal to win the match. Scorers for Italy were Miguel Amieva Saravia (5), Carlos Maria Bertola (1), Goffredo Cutinelli Rendina (1). Scorers for India were Angad Kalaan (3), Lt Col Tarun Sirohi (2), Abhimanyu Pathak (3).
