OBEROI CUP FINALS end in a spectacular finish in Mumbai on Saturday

What spectacular action ! What a finish !....The FINALS of the OBEROI CUP was played at the Polo Ground in Mumbai on Sat Mar 17 at 5:00 pm.
The Oberoi Blues clashed against the Marson team for an exciting game which had everyone at the edge of their seats in the 4th chukkar. Oberoi Blues was comprised of four of the probables (Shamsher Ali +4, Maj Ajay Ahlawat +2, Dhruvpal Godara +5, Capt Navjit Sandhu +3) for the Indian Team for the World Cup Polo 2001 matches to be played in Australia later this month. The Marson team was comprised of Samir Suhag (the highest handicapped Indian player), Angad Kalaan (a member of the Indian World Cup team), Shyam Mariwala (sponsor of the team), and Shyam Mehta. Shamsher Ali was unstoppable along with Dhruv. Once Shamsher got the ball it was almost impossible to catch him. Most of the time he would just run with the ball all the way to the opponents goal. For the Marson team Samir Suhag and Angad Kalaan led the attack, with a great game by Shyam Mariwala, and support from Shyam Mehta. There was tremendous cheering for both sides all the way to the end.
The teams were tied at 6 goals a piece right to the dying moments of the game. About 10 seconds before the final bugle Shamsheer got the ball and took it towards the Marson goal with Angad chasing him. The Marson team could not take the ball away from Shamsher who put the ball through the goal post with less than 1 second to spare. It was all over in that one second. Oberoi Blues had won the Oberoi Cup. The final score was 7 goals to 6.

OBEROI CUP (Game 3 Mumbai, Mar 16) Oberoi Blues vs 61 Cav

Friday March 16 saw Oberoi Blues up against the formidable defense of the 61st Cavalry at the Mahalaxmi race course polo ground in Mumbai.
Right from the word go Oberoi Blues (Shamsher Ali +4, Maj Ajay Ahlawat +2, Dhruvpal Godara +5, Capt Navjit Sandhu +3) were all over the 61st Cavalry (Akhil Sirhoi +2, Maj. Manoj Dewan +2, Col Bhavani Singh +4, Lt. Col. JS Virk +4) with Dhruvpal Godara and Shamsher Ali combining very well, and being provided strong support by Capt. Sandhu and Major Ahlawat. 61st Cavalry played better than the previous day but could not keep up with the fancy stick work of Dhruv and Shamsher. Col. Bhavini Singh pushed in two goals for the 61st Cavalry with the second one being shot in a couple of seconds before the end of the game. Lt. Col. JS Virk with this powerful hits also played an improved came from the last one. The score was 11 goals for Oberoi Blues against 3 1/2 for 61st Cavalry.

OBEROI CUP (Game 2 Mumbai, Mar 14) Marson vs 61 Cav

The second game of the Oberoi Cup was played on Wed Mar 14 at 5 pm at the Polo Field at the Race Course in Mumbai between Marson (Shyam Mariwala +2, Shyam Mehta +2, Samir Suhag +6, Angad Kalaan +4) and 61 Cavalry (Akhil Sirhoi +2, Maj. Manoj Dewan +2, Col Bhavani Singh +4, Lt. Col. JS Virk +4).
This was an extremely fast paced game like the previous day. The Marson Team had regrouped after their loss to Oberoi Blues last evening, and came out playing with renewed confidence. On the other side Col Bhavani Singh and Lt Col Virk were playing their first games at Mumbai this season. Both teams played well initially, but the Marson team played a second half. Angad Kalaan (definitely his best game this season in Mumbai) and Samir Suhag (Highest handicapped Indian Player in India), along with the excellently mounted Shyam Mariwala, and Shyam Mehta easily overcame the attack of the 61 Cavalry by the end of the 3rd chukkar, and further increased their lead by the end of the game. In the second half of the game the combination of Virk, Bhavini, Akhil, and Manoj just did not click. Too many missed penalty shots. In the end Marson team won 9 goals to 4.5 for the 61 Cav.

OBEROI CUP (Game 1 Mumbai, Mar 13) Oberoi Blues Vs Marson

The 14 Goal Oberoi Cup kicked off on Tue Mar 13 with the Oberoi Blues (Shamsher Ali +4, Maj Ajay Ahlawat +2, Dhruvpal Godara +5, Capt Navjit Sandhu +3) playing against Marsons (Shyam Mariwala +2, Shyam Mehta +2, Samir Suhag +6, Angad Kalaan +4).
It was a quick game with goals being scored at short intervals. The Oberoi players are all part of the Indian Team representing in the World Cop Polo 2001 to be played later this month. Majority of the goals were masterfully scored by Shamsher Ali for Oberoi Blues with Dhruvpal knocking in a couple. For Marsons Angad Kalaan and Samir Suhag handled the scoring.
However, the Oberoi Blues combined very well and had no problem beating the Marson team 8 goals to 4. Oberoi Blues is picked to make it to the finals.
