The Newport International Polo Series will open its
18th season on Saturday, June 6 with USA vs. Chile at 5pm. Featuring
teams from around the world competing against USA, the polo matches will
run continuously every Saturday from June through September on
the polo grounds of historic Glen Farm on the outskirts of Newport, at
715 East Main Road/Rte.138 in Portsmouth, RI.
Hailing from the Curico Polo Club, the Chilean polo team returns for its
7th appearance in the Polo Series, to open the 2009 season and defend
its most recent victory against USA, in 2006. Chileans rank among the
worlds elite polo players, with recent acclaim including the 2008 FIP
world championship and the UK Queen's Cup victory, among other
prestigious international titles.
"The international lineup this season includes Chile, Scotland, Ireland,
India, Jamaica, England, South Africa, and Hungary
making its debut!" announced Dan Keating, USA team captain and founder
of the Polo Series.
Dating back more than 130 years, the polo matches are a unique and
popular Newport
summertime tradition for the pubic. Tickets are available at the entry
gates two hours prior to the start of each match. General Admission for
lawn or grandstand seating and tailgate picnics is $10 for adults;
children 15 & under are free. Box seating is also available within in
the Subscribers Enclosure for $15/person. For season tickets, group
reservations and more information call 401-846-0200 or visit

Special events during '09 season include the Newport Polo Club's annual
Asado Lamb Roast on July 18, the International Polo Charity Ball on July
31st, the annual Lobsterbake on August 1, and the annual Jerk Grill on
August, in which the public is invited to partake. For more information
on the special events, contact the Polo Office: 401-847-7090.
Since 1992, the Polo Series takes place in the bucolic setting of Glen
Farm, the last 100 acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm whose
settlement dates back to the 1600's. Its classical stone barns from the
Gilded Age and its park-like grounds were rehabilitated by the Polo
Series' founder and thrive today as an equestrian and community
recreational property.
